Ephemeral Impulses
(Switzerland) URSPRUNG Philip,WANG Zhengxin,,YANG Xiaojian
Abstract:
Temporary buildings for exhibitions, ceremonies, and festivals, be it exhibition spaces, tents, pavilions, or theatrical stages, deeply affect the way architecture deals with time and space. Despite their short life and provisional structure, which is related to momentary events, the impact of temporary buildings on architecture is long-lasting. The first tethered balloon hovering over the first exhibition of industrial products in France in 1798 still lives on in today's shopping malls and airports. There is an ephemeral impulse, a force, that continues through centuries. It reminds us that architecture is never finite and that it is more than an enclosure. It is related to movement, flexibility, lightness, experiment, and life.
Key words:  landscape architecture  temporary architecture  expo  spectacle  lightness  flexibility
