| The House with Air |
| WANG Shu |
| Abstract: |
| This essay revisits the notion of "Amateur Architecture" to reflect on
the tension between academic architecture and everyday houses or informal
constructions. It argues that the true vitality of building lies in spontaneous
vernacular practices, whose simplicity and diversity reveal a generative power
akin to language. Such practices resonate with the presence of dwellings in
Chinese literati landscape paintings, where houses embody philosophical
withdrawal and cultural awareness. Through the author's works such as the
Xiangshan Campus and Wenrun Pavilion, the essay emphasizes the centrality
of "breathing" in architecture: buildings as extensions of the body and nature,
nourished by air, materiality, and the passage of time. In this perspective,
architecture transcends functional or aesthetic definitions, opening a vision
distinct from modernist paradigms. |
