本文标题取自英裔美国诗人奥登(W. H. Auden)。在他看来，雾——清晰视野的死敌——反而是一种恩赐：它让眼睛和心灵挣脱了无所不在的客观 性。雾如烟似汽，亦若薄暮与拂晓，因其模糊无形、无可度量而难以把捉，恰与建筑相对。建筑与它们的融合虽然困难却很必要，因为我们的生活与环境都仰赖 这种结合。考察空气如何介入人类的生活与栖居——无论是未建之境还是已成之屋，通过细读世界各地的艺术作品和(多为现代的)建筑案例，论述逐层展开。文 末重述建筑的起源，以凸显空气在建筑艺术和人类社会中的开创性作用。

Abstract:

The title of this study is taken from the British-American poet W. H. Auden, for whom fog, the sworn enemy of clear-sighted busyness, was a blessing because it relieved the eye and mind of ever-present objectivity. Fog, like smoke and steam, or dusk and dawn, is hard to take hold of because it is indefinite and unmeasured, just the opposite of architecture. Joining the two is difficult but necessary, given the fact that our lives and the settings we inhabit depend on it. This study shows how air participates in our lives and the worlds we inhabit, unbuilt and built. The descriptions and arguments set out are elaborated through close readings of several works of art and a number of buildings, mostly modern, from different parts of the world. The study ends with a retelling of the origins of architecture, focusing on air's inaugural role in both the art of building and human society.
