Research Progress of the Current Status andGovernance Methods of Soil Issues in CommunityGardens at Home and Abroad in Recent TenYears

Abstract:
Community gardens, as an emerging form of urban green space, have become the preferred ways for urban residents to create edible landscapes due to their strong spontaneity and high level of participation. However, recent studies have found that the soil in community gardens exhibits characteristics typical of urban brownfields, such as complex sources and unstable properties. The quality of this soil may impact the safety of edible plants. Therefore, this paper aims to systematically review the relevant research and governance models of community garden soil at home and abroad over the past decade. Utilizing the Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases, and employing CiteSpace for analysis, the study examines the hot topics, publication volume, and development trends. The research progress is analyzed from the perspectives of problem characterization, research subjects and methods, as well as theories and technologies. Building upon this foundation, a summary of the issues and governance methods related to community garden soil is provided. The results indicate that the land use attributes of community gardens are unclear, and the soil conditions are complex and variable. There is evidence of soil pollution, primarily involving heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which may pose risks to human health. Additionally, the soil exhibits low nutrient levels and tendencies toward drought and alkalization. At present, the primary method for community garden soil remediation involves phytoremediation, supplemented by various combined technologies. The research findings can serve as valuable references for the construction, management, and maintenance of community gardens.
