| The Evolution of Landscape Plant Research in Chinese Landscape Architecture over 40 Years |
| JIN Hexian,,FAN Yingjia |
| Abstract: |
| As a leading academic journal in China's landscape architecture
discipline, Chinese Landscape Architecture has documented the 40-year
evolution of landscape plant research since its inception in 1985. This study
systematically examines the developmental trajectory of landscape plant
research by analyzing over 900 relevant articles published between 1985 and
2024, contextualized within the framework of national ecological civilization
policies, disciplinary trends, and the journal's evolving focus. The findings reveal
a three-stage progression characterized by a shift from technical application
to multidimensional value integration, while noting that the journal's increasing
emphasis on macro-level research has somewhat diminished the systematic
presentation of micro-level plant application technologies. Stage 1: Initiation of
Urban Greening and Practical Technology Research (1985-1999) focused on
foundational techniques such as plant introduction, cultivation, and pest control,
addressing the basic needs of urban greening. Stage 2: Ecological Garden
City and Diversified Landscape Integration (2000-2011) expanded research to
plant diversity, ecological restoration, and other domains, with methodologies
becoming increasingly scientific. Stage 3: Ecological Civilization and High-Quality
Development (2012-present) has seen deep interdisciplinary integration, aligning
with national strategies like "Beautiful China", achieving breakthroughs in highcarbon-sink
plant screening and healthy landscapes, alongside the widespread
adoption of intelligent technologies like GIS and remote sensing. Over the
40-year span, landscape plant research has evolved from basic cultivation
techniques to broader themes like ecological restoration, biodiversity, and
healthy landscapes, reflecting dynamic alignment with national strategic needs.
However, the proportion of published articles on the subject declined from 27%
in 1985 to 5% in 2024, attributable to factors such as disciplinary maturation,
research evaluation systems, and interdisciplinary dilution. Future research
should further strengthen specialized columns on landscape plants, enhance
applied research integrating new technologies like digital twins, and elevate
the journal's academic influence through thematic conferences and expedited
publication channels for high-quality research. Moving forward, while maintaining
traditional strengths, the journal should actively explore emerging research
directions to provide robust theoretical and technical support for building a
modern society in harmony with nature. |
