| The Evolution of Planning and Design Research in Chinese Landscape Architecture: A 40-Year Review |

| Abstract: |
| As a comprehensive and theoretical academic journal supervised by
the China Association for Science and Technology and hosted by the Chinese
Society of Landscape Architecture, Chinese Landscape Architecture, since
its founding in 1985, has evolved into one of the most influential academic
publications in China's landscape architecture discipline and urban greening
industry. Its papers reflect the historical development of the field over the past 40
years of reform and opening-up. The journal has played a dual role: advancing
and documenting the scientific progress of the discipline and industry, and
serving as a critical bridge for communication between them. On the occasion of
its 40th anniversary, reviewing the evolution of its planning and design practiceoriented
papers provides insight into the broader development of the discipline
and industry, and highlights the journal's foundational role as a bridge among
academia, practice, theory, policy, and implementation. This study analyzes
the journal's contributions from 1985 to 2024 using bibliometric methods and
CiteSpace, focusing on two dimensions: the evolution of research topics and
industry development, and the progression of paper paradigms and disciplinary
construction. A total of 1,385 planning and design practice-oriented papers were
analyzed. Findings reveal steady growth in publication numbers over 40 years,
with universities and state-owned design institutes as the main contributors.
Author collaboration has intensified, and project locations span the entire nation.
Three key features characterize the evolution of research topics: First, core
business areas have remained stable, including urban landscape planning, green
space and ecological planning, and scenic/natural reserve planning. Park design,
a central component of urban planning, continues to hold significant weight.
Second, the scope of practice has expanded significantly from urban design
to 21 types, such as tourism and recreation planning, rural landscape design,
ecological restoration, and urban renewal. Non-core urban design projects now
account for a much larger share. Third, the contextual framework has shifted
across phases, reflecting changing societal and policy priorities. These trends
demonstrate the close ties between planning practice and the industry, including
responsiveness to policy, theoretical and practical contributions to policymaking,
and deep links with economic development. Three stages mark the
evolution of research paradigms: From 1985 to 1994, the focus was on project
introductions and experience sharing, centered on the projects themselves.
From 1995 to 2014, the emphasis shifted to incorporating concepts and
technologies, while still project-based, with emerging theoretical and technical
support. From 2015 to 2024, the field entered an academic transformation
phase, focusing on planning and design methodologies rather than individual
projects. These stages reflect the growing scientific rigor of the discipline and
the journal's reciprocal role in elevating disciplinary standards. In summary,
Chinese Landscape Architecture effectively bridged the discipline and industry. It
is recommended that the journal further align with emerging trends, enhance its
editorial and review mechanisms for practice-oriented research, and strengthen
its role as a connector among theory, policy, and practice. By guiding research
to better address policy needs, industry realities, and transformation goals, the
journal can contribute to the sustainable and modernized development of the
landscape architecture sector and its governance systems. |
