“亚洲花卉主题园”因亚运而生、为市民而动，被市民称为“杭州最浪漫的莫奈花园”，成为杭州城市花园的新地标。回顾了项目建设背景，提出了城 市花园的概念、设计与营建原则，分析在“微改造、重花卉、强体验”设计理念下，利用多样性的花卉应用形式，进行城市花园的空间设计、植物选择与配置， 并宣传亚洲植物及其文化。通过问卷调查和游客量统计，分析响应公众诉求的城市花园效应，为在公园城市建设背景下，建设更多服务于公众需求、表达花卉植 物为主景的城市花园提供参考借鉴

Abstract:

Amid the accelerating pace of urbanization and the growing public demand for green spaces, city gardens have become a vital medium for enhancing quality of life and promoting ecological sustainability. Their design and implementation must increasingly align closely with public needs. This paper takes Hangzhou Asian Floral Theme Garden as a case study to systematically explore design strategies and practical approaches for urban gardens oriented toward "serving citizens and prioritizing ecology". Leveraging the opportunity presented by the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, the garden was developed around the core concepts of "micro-renovation, floral richness, and strong experiential engagement". Through the thematic narrative of "The Story of Seeds", a modern city garden that combines ecological features, Asian plant culture, and interactive experiences has been constructed, providing an innovative practical reference for similar projects. In early 2023, the Hangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference proposed the construction of an "Asian Floral Theme Garden", intended to fill the gap in open-access floral parks and deeply integrate the spirit of the Asian Games with local urban culture. The project was located in Qianjiang Century Park, taking advantage of its prime location adjacent to the Olympic Sports Center and a metro hub. Despite a tight schedule of less than seven months, the garden was fully designed and constructed. The process not only reflects the government's quick response to public needs but also demonstrates the high-efficiency collaboration capabilities of the landscape architecture industry under major event-driven scenarios. The project centers on perennial herbaceous plants to create a low-maintenance, highly stable ecological plant community. Over 200 plant species adapted to the local climate, were carefully selected and arranged using modular design (three blue-purple themed modules: A/B/C) to ensure seasonal variation in landscape presentation. Scientific flower-cycle regulation techniques — including selection of autumn-blooming lotus varieties and strategic pruning of perennials — ensured peak visual impact during the Asian Games while minimizing long-term maintenance costs. Centering on the narrative axis of the "Land and Maritime Silk Roads", the design of the Hangzhou Asian Floral Garden is structured around three thematic zones: "Oriental Floral Charm", "Asian Floral Carpet", and "Floral Sails Setting Off". These zones are interconnected through landscape nodes that weave together diverse Asian cultural symbols: Oriental Floral Charm: Featuring bamboo-structured art galleries and pinecone sculptures as core elements, this zone integrates East Asian national flowers to convey the restrained and elegant aesthetics of the Song Dynasty. Asian Floral Carpet: A 4,400, natural flower and grass meadow form the centerpiece, where "Hand-in-Hand" and "Heart-to-Heart" patterns metaphorically symbolize Asian unity. This area incorporates Central Asian plants and West Asian xerophyte gardens, delivering a dual impact of visual splendor and cultural richness. Floral Sails Setting Off: Utilizing boat-shaped flower boxes and aerial floral installations to evoke the imagery of the Maritime Silk Road, enhancing both interactivity and landmark features. To cater to the preferences of younger audiences, the design emphasizes a "strong experiential" concept: Multi-sensory Interaction: Orchid plants and LED poetry light panels are suspended within the bamboo corridor, combined with misting systems and nighttime lighting, to create a fourdimensional "visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile" experience. Color Appeal: A palette dominated by shades of blue and purple, complemented by the dreamy pink tones of pink muhly grass, breaks away from the traditional flamboyant style of floral exhibitions and aligns with contemporary aesthetic preferences. Spatial Immersion: Wooden boardwalks and pebble pathways are introduced, encouraging visitors to venture deep into the floral meadows, creating an immersive "wandering among flowers" experience. From the park's opening in September 2023 through the end of the Asian Para Games, the garden received a cumulative 717,000 visitors, with an average daily attendance of 13,300 and a National Day peak of 26,300 in a single day. The successful practice of Hangzhou Asian Floral Garden demonstrates that a design strategy centered on public needs while balancing ecology and culture can effectively revitalize urban public spaces and realize the vision of a "people-centered city". Its innovations are reflected in three key aspects. Balancing Event-driven and Daily Use: Transforming a short-term Asian Games showcase into a long-term public amenity. Integrating Ecological Technology and Cultural Narrative: Combining scientific plant configurations with Silk Road cultural imagery to create a garden model that is both globally minded and locally rooted. Youth-oriented and Inclusive Design: Utilizing color schemes and interactive elements to attract diverse groups, promoting the transition of urban gardens from "viewing spaces" to "living spaces".
