| Healthy Streets: An Important Pathway and Practical Applicationof Urban Regeneration |
| YU Yang,,HUANG Yuxin |
| Abstract: |
| Against the backdrop of China's urban development entering a
stage of optimizing existing urban built environments, urban renewal and urban
construction are increasingly emphasizing health-value-oriented space making
and governance, thereby advancing the Healthy City strategy. As a basic
component of urban space and the direct setting of residents' everyday health
behaviors, streets are indispensable to healthy cities and constitute an important
functional carrier for translating health goals into spatial practice. In China,
however, the theoretical development and practical application of healthy streets
still face challenges. The interaction mechanisms among human perception,
behavior, and environment remain insufficiently clarified, while assessment
methods and design strategies still require optimization to adapt to diverse built
environments and changing resident needs. On this basis, this paper reviews
relevant research and practical explorations, and reveals the mechanism through
which street environments affect public health through three levels and six
dimensions: environmental exposure and safe mobility at the basic support
level, physical activity and food access at the behavior activation level, and
mental and cognitive development and social inclusion at the value guidance
level. The paper further constructs an environment-perception-behavior triadic
interaction model for healthy streets, interpreting healthy streets as a dynamic
process and positioning the six dimensions within this model. For healthy
streets to move from theoretical advocacy toward design practice, health goals
need to be translated into assessment items that can be identified, judged,
and fed back into street-space renewal. Therefore, the paper proposes a value
assessment and diagnostic framework following the logic of environmental
elements, mediating pathways, health values, and monitoring feedback. Through
cases such as Urban Renewal of Huangyan Waterfront - Fostering Connection
and SIU KAI FONG, the paper analyzes the common strategies and value
orientations of healthy streets in practical projects, and examines their multiple
value connotations. The study concludes that healthy streets constitute an
urban renewal method integrating environmental quality, social vitality, economic
sustainability, and the quality of public life, enabling streets to become the health
infrastructure for all. |
