| Abstract: |
| Chinese Landscape Architecture is the first professional academic
journal in China dedicated to the theory and practice of Landscape Architecture
that has been publicly distributed nationwide, formally published, continuously
operated, and comprehensively covering the field since the founding of the
People's Republic of China. For the discipline (or profession) of Landscape
Architecture in China, Chinese Landscape Architecture magazine holds
pioneering significance. In terms of historical and theoretical research, its
representative characteristics lie in its authority, archival nature, and practical
attributes, making it one of the best samples for analyzing the evolution of
this field. Through keyword retrieval and manual examination, 2,394 articles
concerning the history and theory of Landscape Architecture in China and
abroad, published in Chinese Landscape Architecture between 1985 and 2024,
were taken as the objects of analysis. Building upon three fundamental issues in
the study of history and theory in Landscape Architecture, this paper establishes
an analytical framework of "Content-Approach-Concept". Here, "Content"
refers to the history and theories related to garden construction, including the
restoration and verification of construction information, construction contexts
and conditions, regional garden histories, typological garden histories, and the
evolution of garden construction practices across different periods. "Approach"
denotes the history and theory associated with garden design, covering methods
and techniques, craftsmanship, designers, and garden-related treatises.
"Concept" encompasses two aspects: first, the ontology and epistemology
of traditional gardens, such as cultural values and aesthetic ideas; second,
contemporary notions concerning the conservation and inheritance of historical
gardens, such as heritage conservation and design practice philosophies. On
the basis of this framework, this paper elaborates on the research progress
and major academic characteristics of several more specific sub-stages within
the above-mentioned periods. The development of historical and theoretical
research in Chinese Landscape Architecture could be divided into five phases:
1) the Initial Exploration Phase (1985-1989), when both the discipline (or
profession) and the journal started in the context of Reform and Opening-up,
yet flourished on the solid academic foundation laid by earlier generations;
2) the System Construction Phase (1990-1999), during which, along with the
profound changes in the global landscape and the refinement of the educational
and practical system, the academic community gradually established a basic
system for research; 3) the Refinement and Differentiation Phase (2000-2009):
when China entered a period of rapid economic growth and global integration,
driving specialized fields of research further advanced; 4) the Diversification and
Expansion Phase (2010-2019): when the nation’s economy stabilized at a high
level, research investment from multiple sources increased, and interdisciplinary
approaches fostered a broadening of research agendas; 5) the Transformation
and Reconstruction Phase (2020-2024): when global instability and the rise of
artificial intelligence brought great uncertainty to the development of Landscape
Architecture, while also creating opportunities for digital transformation and
interdisciplinary integration. This study may be regarded as a lens through
which to examine the dynamic characteristics and evolutionary patterns of
historical and theoretical research in Chinese Landscape Architecture, providing
an academic basis for the comprehensive research on the historiography of
Chinese Landscape Architecture. Nevertheless, extrapolating the full panorama
of Chinese Landscape Architecture historiography solely from the achievements
of Chinese Landscape Architecture over its 40-year history has inherent
limitations. A considerable body of research outside this journal also warrants
systematic attention, with more diverse possibilities, deeper observations, and
more nuanced insights awaiting further synthesis and exploration |
